If you’ve recently bought a home, make sure to file your homestead exemption and lower your property’s taxable value. If you plan to purchase in the future, Texas’ new law allows homeowners to file for a homestead exemption in the same year they purchase instead of the following year. To file, follow these steps:
1. Contact the appraisal district of the county in which you reside to acquire the form, or download the form from the appraisal district website.
2. Complete the Form and attach a copy of your driver’s license that matches the address of the homestead.
3. Submit the Form to the appraisal district. A new Texas law lets you apply for your homestead exemption in the same year you purchase.
