Melissa’s this fast-growing spot in Collin County, northeast of McKinney, with that classic Texas small-town heart but a serious glow-up. Back in the 1840s, settlers came for the rich soil and water—perfect for farming. By 1872, the railroad rolled in, and bam, the town was born, named Melissa (maybe after a railroad exec’s daughter, nobody’s 100% sure). It was a big deal for farmers, with cotton gins and a mill, but a rough tornado in 1921 and a fire in ’29 hit hard.
For a while, it stayed quiet—think 500 folks tops in the mid-20th century. But since the 2000s, Melissa’s been on fire (the good kind). It incorporated in the ‘70s, and now in 2025, it’s got over 30,000 people! New neighborhoods, awesome schools (Melissa ISD is top-tier), and cool spots like the Z-Plex sports complex and a Buc-ee’s make it a hot spot. It’s close enough to Dallas for a quick commute but still feels like its own thing. Just a lively, growing place with deep Texas roots.
