Fairview, Texas, is a town in Collin County, part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, it had a population of approximately 10,372, growing to an estimated 10,790 by 2023 Wilson County Historical Society+15Wikipedia+15TSHA Online+15. Fairview is bordered by McKinney, Allen, and Lucas, and its landscape maintains a deliberate rural character through zoning rules that require minimum one-acre residential lots.
Originally settled in the late 1850s by German and Polish families at a crossroads in western Wilson County (before Collin County’s development), the community’s earliest commerce began when Henry Hudson opened a store and post office in 1868 on Old Oakville Road . By the 1890s, Fairview had developed to include multiple churches, doctors, a blacksmith, a cotton gin, a school, a Masonic lodge, and a telephone exchange—all fueled by cotton agricultural patterns. By the 1940s, just two stores and two churches remained, and the school served only first and second grades . One unique legacy of the area is its long history of law enforcement: Fairview produced twenty-seven Texas peace officers, including famed Ranger Frank Hamer (1884–1955), known for pursuing Bonnie and Clyde .
In May 1958, residents held a small election—just 50 ballots—to choose incorporation as a town rather than face annexation by neighboring McKinney. The incorporation passed by a 48-to-2 vote, establishing Fairview with its own governance and enabling residents to preserve their rural ambiance. Initially, the town council met in homes or local businesses until municipal services gradually developed; in 1965, Fairview built a water tower, now still standing though inactive. Formal zoning and a volunteer fire department were established in 1973.
In modern times, Fairview continues to attract residents seeking both a pastoral feel and proximity to Dallas-area cities. The nearby Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary, spanning 289 acres, is a popular destination for nature lovers Wikipedia. Recently, the town has been the focal point of controversy surrounding the planned Fairview Texas Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints—centered on zoning concerns over its proposed 120‑foot spire and 30,000 sq ft footprint. The dispute has involved legal filings, community opposition, and attempts at mediation to balance religious freedom with local zoning ordinances.
