Rowlett, Texas, is a growing suburban city located in northeastern Dallas County and partially in Rockwall County, situated along the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard. Known for its family-friendly atmosphere, scenic lakefront views, and proximity to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Rowlett has evolved from a quiet rural community into a thriving residential hub.

The city’s history dates back to the mid-1800s. It was named after Rowlett Creek, which in turn was named for Daniel Rowlett, a pioneer who led a group of settlers to the area from Kentucky. The town was formally established in the 1880s, following the arrival of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railroad, which enhanced accessibility and trade. Agriculture, particularly cotton farming, was the primary economic driver during the early years. Rowlett remained a small rural town for much of the 20th century, even after being incorporated in 1952.

Significant growth began in the latter half of the 20th century with the construction of Lake Ray Hubbard in the 1960s. The lake brought recreational opportunities and attracted residential development. In more recent decades, Rowlett has experienced rapid suburban expansion, aided by major transportation developments such as the President George Bush Turnpike and the DART Blue Line extension, which connects the city to downtown Dallas.

Today, Rowlett is recognized for its blend of small-town charm and modern amenities, offering a mix of lakefront living, parks, trails, and a developing downtown area.
