Historical Background
Carrollton’s roots trace back to the early 1840s, when settlers from the American South began moving into the area as part of Peters Colony—a land grant initiative by the Republic of Texas to encourage settlement. Early families, including the A.W. Perry family, were instrumental in founding the local economy, which was originally based on agriculture, especially cotton, corn, and wheat farming.
The arrival of the railroad in the 1870s, particularly the Dallas-Wichita and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) rail lines, significantly boosted Carrollton’s growth. The town became a key shipping point for livestock, grain, and gravel. By 1913, Carrollton had officially incorporated, and its economy diversified with the development of brick manufacturing and other industries.
